How to order interpreting
When ordering interpreting, it is important to give your vendor (Honyaku Plus, we hope!), as much advanced notice as possible. This is because the pool of qualified interpreters is fairly small, and the best people tend to book up well in advance.
We recommend that you try and let us know your requirements two months ahead of time. It is also important to specify your requirements in as much detail as you can, with particular focus on the following points:
Required details
Location
Please specify the location where the interpreting assignment will take place. Minimally, we need to know the city (e.g. Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima), as this may involve additional expenses for interpreter travel and accommodation. Closer to the time of the assignment, we will naturally need to know the exact address of the venue.
Dates and times
Please specify the date(s) of your interpreting assignment, and the start and end times for when you will require the interpreter(s) to be on duty—e.g. 09:00 to 17:00.
Mode
Interpreting comes in three main types: consecutive, simultaneous and whispering. There is also the distinction between in-person, on-site interpreting and remote interpreting (via Zoom, Teams etc.).
Please specify at the outset which mode you require—e.g. “on-site consecutive” or “remote simultaneous”. If you are unsure, we shall be happy to offer our advice.
Number of interpreters
Please specify how many interpreters will be needed. This will depend on a number of factors—in particular, on whether consecutive or simultaneous interpreting is required. Simultaneous interpreting is very tiring for interpreters, so these types of assignment normally require at least two interpreters working in tandem.
A day-long meeting that requires consecutive interpreting can likely be handled by a single interpreter. Larger-scale or multi-day events may very well require two or more interpreters, however.
During initial discussions on your particular project, we can advise you on the optimum number of interpreters to meet your needs.
Equipment
For simultaneous interpreting, special equipment is sometimes required. This usually consists of an enclosed booth where the interpreters sit, and Panaguide headsets for the audience, which enable them to listen to the interpreted speech.
Please specify well in advance if you will require this equipment. Again, we will be happy to advise you on this during initial discussion of your particular project.
